Description
The Fordrough is a designated off-road private owned public right of way. Historical records show that The Fordrough originated as an old farm track, with maps dating back to 1899 - 1913 highlighting the route's passage through Ley Hill Farm. Currently, the route serves as an off-road pathway connecting the Four Oaks Road to the Lichfield Road. The route provides direct access from the Four Oaks Road to the local centre of Mere Green. Despite its popularity, the quality of the route means it is not accessible for all users. The path is characterised by poorly surfaced sections with loose gravel, resulting in an unpleasant walking experience, particularly for individuals with disabilities, who find mobility aids, such as wheelchairs, impeded by the unstable surface. To address these concerns, a proposal has been put forward to upgrade the Fordrough route from Lichfield Road, across the railway line and Irnham Road, stopping at the point where the Fordrough turns into a private road. The improvements include widening the footway to a minimum of 1.5 meters (up to 2.0 meters where feasible) and implementing a high-quality surface material that ensures safe and convenient use for all individuals. A joint project, with funding from the Four Oaks Ward Brum Breathes would enable a coherent and high-quality walking route from the Lichfield Road up to the end of the footway at the private road providing an all-inclusive accessible route within a residential neighbourhood and facilitate stronger walking links within the area.
