Description

National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) is an electricity transmission business which owns, operates and maintains the transmission network within England and Wales, including the 1 416-mile underground transmission network that exists across both countries. NGET is interested in understanding and exploring innovative concepts included within underground cable systems research, with the results from this Periodic Indicative Notice (PIN) helping to inform NGET’s future underground transmission strategy. NGET has separated this PIN into seven sections, although these sections are not mutually exclusive. The purpose of this PIN is to gain information across the seven sections, with the possibility for future trial projects or Network Innovation Allowance (NIA) funded projects existing as a result – refer to section II.2.4) below. NGET wish to engage the market to understand and explore innovative concepts within cable systems research. Responses shall predominantly be used to inform and guide NGET’s future underground transmission strategy. Evaluation of responses shall occur in order to determine those regarded as most appropriate for future trail projects or NIA funded projects, which fall under the Utilities Contracts Regulations (UCR) 2016 thresholds. Nonetheless, there exists no guarantee that any future trial project or NIA funded project shall occur subsequent to this PIN. Any future tender of related projects with a value above the applicable thresholds may be subject to its own call for competition via Achilles UVDB and shall adhere to the UCR 2016. To take part in this PIN, a questionnaire which seeks feedback on the below areas is available by contacting Tom Bradley (Senior Buyer at National Grid) via email (Tom.Bradley@nationalgrid.com): 1) cooling systems for cable systems (design and feasibility assessment); 2) big data analytics for cable systems; 3) cable system condition monitoring techniques (for cables and accessories); 4) novel cable backfills and monitoring of local soil conditions; 5) developing a long-term cable research centre; 6) environmentally friendly cable solutions; 7) other cable innovations. Please be aware that feedback to questionnaire responses can be obtained by contacting Tom Bradley to request it. The deadline for responses is 2 October 2020 at 4 p.m. (GMT).
