Waterways Ireland are looking to grow awareness of Waterways Ireland and its inland waterways (lakes, rivers and canals) and to increase participation in recreational activities alongside and on the waterways - walking, cycling, boating, canoeing, kayaking, angling etc. The main media channels are likely to be AV, radio and social. Waterways Ireland’s statutory function is to manage, maintain, develop, restore and market specified inland navigable waterways, principally for recreational purposes. • Our PURPOSE: to be the custodian of the inland navigations and collaborate to reimagine, maintain, develop, and promote them to sustain communities, environment and heritage • Our MISSION is “As custodians of the waterways to collaboratively reimagine, maintain, develop and promote our inland navigations” • Our VALUES are Passionate; Collaborative; Innovative and Accountable Waterways Ireland’s work programmes are critical to providing a safe and high-quality recreational environment for users, whilst preserving the industrial and environmental heritage of the waterways for future generations. Waterways Ireland has developed our waterways infrastructure and associated facilities and services and raised standards. Among the hundreds of projects successfully delivered are the iconic Acres Lake Boardwalk (Co Leitrim), Meelick Weir (linking Co Galway and Co Offaly), the recently accredited Lough Derg Blueway (the first of its kind), The Shannon Tourism Masterplan and The Royal Canal Greenway (spanning counties Meath, Kildare, Westmeath and Longford), which have delivered significant economic and social value. In the Royal Canal Greenway’s first year of operation, 640,000 visits were recorded, creating an economic value of €17.2million to the business community.
