Description

Scope of Work To provide context for the study, the first part of the research will be composed of the following: • A high-level quantitative assessment of the volumes/durations of energy storage needed to decarbonise the Irish electricity sector by 2035. Power system assumptions to be agreed with ESI but would consider latest renewable capacity targets, electricity demand projections and flexible demand capability. • A high-level quantitative assessment of the additional volumes/duration of energy storage required to meet Ireland’s 2050 net-zero economy goal. • A qualitative assessment of the types of energy storage technologies, both existing and emerging, that could form part of Ireland’s energy future e.g., technology readiness level, suitability for Ireland, international examples etc. • Assessment of the investment potential in monetary terms for the energy storage sector out to 2035 and 2050 e.g., range of capital/operating expenditure required. • Assessment of the employment potential in the energy storage sector for 2035 and 2050 based on volumes of storage and types of technologies identified i.e., number of jobs supported across development, construction, operation, and maintenance. Once the context has been established, the main focus of this research will be the second phase of this project where, in collaboration with ESI and other industry members via workforce surveys, interviews, workshops etc., the consultant will address the following key questions: • What capabilities/skills requirements are needed by energy storage companies/professionals for their future work? • What are the key gaps in current capability? • How do we develop these skill gaps to be world leaders in this space and make Ireland a world leader in energy storage? • What are the types of course/development programmes that will needed to unlock these employment opportunities?
