It has many parallels with the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), in which similar changes in plasma protein fractions cause the rate of erythrocytes sedimentation to increase. Like the ESR, PV testing is not specific for any particular disease or condition but instead has a screening and monitoring value. It is of use to measure plasma viscosity in patients known to have multiple myeloma (MM) and related monoclonal gammopathies.
