Description
Trafford Council is looking to commission a mentoring support service for children and young people aged 7 – 18 years (25 for care experienced young people or those with SEND) that are engaged in or at risk of serious youth violence. Sport should be used as a ‘hook’ to engage mentees. Mentoring is effective in both reducing crime and the behaviours associated with crime and violence. The research suggests that, on average, mentoring reduces violence by 21%, all offending by 14%, and reoffending by 19%. (Youth Endowment Fund) There are several ways in which the mentor may support the mentee; • Acting as a positive role-model and setting a good example for a mentee. • Acting as an advocate for the mentee, seeking their views at multiple points throughout the relationship. • Developing a trusting relationship and providing emotional support. • Helping the mentee to develop life skills, social skills or communication skills. • Encourage positive relationships with peers and within families. • Educate and raise awareness around risk taking behaviours. • Helping the mentee with learning and academic development. • Providing practical support with job applications or access to services. • Sharing their networks and introducing mentees to social, cultural, sports and diversionary activities which genuinely engage young people and encourage positive use of leisure time.
